Establishing Sound Physical Health

A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Upon or prior to admission to Atlantic House, we ensure that every young person is registered with a local GP, dentist, and optician. Healthcare needs are thoroughly identified at intake and a detailed, confidential health record is maintained for each child.

Our daily physical health approach includes:

  • Nutritious Dining: Serving balanced, fresh meals prepared in-house, with children actively involved in meal selection and food preparation.
  • Life Skills Development: Teaching children age-appropriate cooking, shopping, and hygiene independence skills.
  • Physical Activity: Encouraging sports, outdoor activities, and active hobbies in local Derby clubs.

Therapeutic Care

Mental Health & Clinical Psychology

In partnership with Meadows Psychology Service (MPS), we offer professional psychological consultation, formulation, and support.

Meadows Psychology Service

Meadows Psychology Service is a clinical psychology-led team specializing in supporting residential children's settings through a trauma-informed lens. They provide:

Reflective practice & team consults
Regulation curve assessments
Psychological formulations for each child

Psychological Care and Formulation

We work closely with Meadows Psychology Service to create customised psychological formulations for each young person. A formulation acts as a roadmap, helping the care team understand how the child's past experiences shape their current coping mechanisms and emotional displays.

For children experiencing significant emotional or behavioural dysregulation, we review and apply detailed regulation curves, implementing targeted de-escalation strategies. Our therapeutic wrap-around support addresses:

  • EBD and developmental attachment trauma.
  • Risk of substance misuse or self-harming behaviours.
  • Difficulties relating to sexualised behaviours or exploitation.
  • Any additional psychiatric or neurodivergent diagnoses (e.g. ADHD, Autism).
Skill Development

Therapeutic Staff Training

To deliver high-quality, trauma-informed care daily, our staff are comprehensively trained in therapeutic parenting and psychology frameworks. We embed the ARC Framework and the PACE Model into our standard training and daily interactions, ensuring a consistent therapeutic vocabulary.

Our core staff training curriculum features modules on:

  • Basic child development and attachment theory.
  • The neurobiological impact of developmental trauma.
  • Therapeutic keywork and therapeutic reparenting techniques.
  • Managing developmental trauma responses through regulation.

Medication Safety

All prescribed and over-the-counter medications are administered strictly in accordance with prescription instructions by fully trained, competent staff. Medications are stored in a double-locked, secure steel cabinet inside the staff office, with rigorous records maintained in individual logs.
